Kate is a fierce believer that global poverty is not inevitable and that market forces and individual resolve are some of the sharpest tools available to us in that fight.

For the past several years, she has held leadership positions in international development organizations providing financial services and access to higher education to millions of the world’s poorest citizens. She served as Chief Operating Officer for Vittana, directing strategy for stimulating student loan markets in developing countries and later served as a consultant and board member disseminating the learnings from that organization.

Prior to Vittana, she held a range of executive roles at Unitus, a microfinance accelerator. She is a founding Board member of Upaya Social Ventures and served as its Chair and Treasurer prior to joining the staff.

In addition, Kate has consulted independently with a range of nonprofit organizations and social businesses. She is a frequent speaker on social entrepreneurship and the intersection of markets and mission at business schools and conferences.

Kate holds a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA Anderson.

Sachi Shenoy

Sachi Shenoy has a decade of experience in developing social enterprises to meet the needs of the poor and ultra poor, designing and implementing field interventions, and conducting social performance evaluations and investment advisory for a variety of organizations throughout Asia. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Upaya and on the Advisory Board of the Chicago Booth Social Enterprise Initiative (SEI). Her work has been featured in Wall Street Journal – India and the Stanford Social Innovation Review. In 2014, she was named to the Puget Sound Business Journal's "40 Under 40" list, an honor that "spotlights the top business leaders under the age of 40 who excel in their industry and show dynamic leadership." 

Sachi spent three years at Unitus, where she most recently served as Director of Global Programs and led the Social Performance Management Implementation Project (SPM IP) and Sorenson / Unitus Ultra Poor Initiative. Prior to Unitus, Sachi served as Area Manager at SKS Microfinance Pvt. Ltd., leading the organization's entry into the New Delhi urban microfinance market. In 2005, Sachi authored the business proposal for the SKS Ultra Poor Program, designed to uplift rural, destitute populations. Sachi has also worked at New York-based CDVCA, where she evaluated seed-stage social enterprises and constructed investment recommendations for its Central Fund; JP Morgan Chase, where she worked in the Sales & Trading division; and Price Waterhouse LLP, where she served as a management consultant for the financial services industry.

Sachi holds a B.A. in Economics and an M.B.A. in Finance and Entrepreneurship with High Honors from the University of Chicago.

Sreejith brings to Upaya over 12 years of experience in SME promotion and incubation, entrepreneurship, retail, emerging markets, and financial inclusion. Most recently, Sreejith was the Co-Founder and Managing Director of ROPE International, a premium brand of natural, handmade lifestyle products from renewable materials. Today the company creates employment opportunities for over 1,000 rural artisans through its village cluster model, and wholesales its products to a variety of well-recognized domestic and international retailers.

Prior to his work with ROPE, Sreejith was part of the TeNeT Group, IIT Madras team where he held senior roles including the lead of a rural artisan training project to popularize village internet kiosk-based ICT tools, and another as operations head of a rural BPO start-up. Before joining TeNet, he was a Senior Associate, Business Incubation with the Villgro Innovations Foundation where he screened and conducted due diligence of entrepreneurs in the dairy and livestock sectors. During his time with Villgro, he also lead the implementation of the organization’s Innovations to Market Program where he created marketing tie-ups with established micro-finance and development organizations. Sreejith began his career with the DHAN Foundation, working with rural self-help groups on microfinance and natural resources management issues and worked as managing director to a leading federation of self-help groups promoted by DHAN Foundation.

Throughout his career, Sreejith has also worked as consultant to a number of international organizations including Business and Finance Consulting GmbH Zurich, Women on Wings, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, and Simpa Networks. He received his B. Tech (Mechanical) from the Government Engineering College Thrissur in Kerala and Post-graduate Diploma in Development Management from Tata-Dhan Academy, Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

Jayme Hommer brings more than ten years of development experience to the Upaya team. As Development Director, she works to raise the funds needed to bring life changing jobs to India's extreme poor. Jayme has worked for a variety of causes, including education reform in Washington, DC, theater, health care, and higher education. She was a major gift officer for Georgetown University Medical Center, where she was charged with developing a pipeline of individual donors for the University's neuroscience program, including individuals and foundations. While at Georgetown, she was part of the team that launched Music for the Mind, a successful signature event for supporting young neuroscientist. 

Before joining Georgetown, Jayme spent five years at Unitus, a high-growth microfinance network that provided capacity building consulting services and access to capital for 27 microfinance institutions in the developing world.  Previously, Jayme worked for the Children's Tumor Foundation, which raises funds to support scientific research on neurofibromatosis as well as programs to support children and families with neurofibromatosis. 

Jayme holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Policy from the University of Michigan and a Certificate in Fundraising Management from the University of Washington.

Aparna brings to Upaya rich finance related experience across a variety of industries. Her core expertise lies in a unique mix of corporate finance and strategy domains. She most recently completed a project with Drishtee, a social enterprise focused on rural India and catering to the critical needs of base of the pyramid. She also played a key role in devising the financial plan for the company's micro-enterprise lending arm and worked closely on financial projections and valuation for the fund, creating the business plan as well as strategies for entrepreneur assessment.

Prior to her time at Drishtee Aparna was with Masan Group, Vietnam's largest private sector company with large scale operating platforms in the consumer products, financial services and resources sectors. At Masan, Aparna worked as part of the Business Intelligence Unit, reporting directly to the group CEO office, and was responsible for analyzing M&A opportunities for the group in the South-east Asia market. Before joining Masan Aparna was a core team member of an early stage internet start-up, trefis.com where she authored several research reports on the aviation sector and regularly blogged on major online finance news forums such as the Forbes ‘Great Speculations’ column, The Street and Seeking Alpha. Aparna started out at McKinsey as an Analyst with the Corporate Finance practice. Here, she worked extensively with McKinsey Partners and consultants on corporate finance related client projects, such as diagnosing the capital market performance of the client and creating strategic recommendations.

Aparna holds a Bachelor's in Business from College of Business Studies, Delhi University. She has completed two levels of international CFA program. She has also completed many papers in Actuarial Sciences and certification programmes from National Stock Exchange of India.

Jyotsna is an experienced development professional with specialized knowledge across a range of issues from agricultural economics to public health and nutrition with sound background in monitoring and evaluation and programme assessment. At Upaya she spearheads the design and implementation of social metric surveys conducted by Upaya for its partner organisations.

Before joining Upaya, Jyotsna was part of the Child Health and Nutrition team at the ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth. There she worked on programs to strengthen public health systems, improve community health worker models, enhance public nutrition schemes, and address issues revolving around Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) .

Jyotsna holds a M.A. in Development Studies , with specialization in Development Economics from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences , Mumbai, and a B.A. in Economics from University of Delhi. Her Master’s thesis analyzed the costs and margins associated with marketing mustard seeds.

Anuradha joins the Upaya team as a Senior Business Development Associate. She is a Chartered Accountant and an MBA from the Indian School of Business.

Prior to joining Upaya, she worked at Microsoft in a Financial Planning and Analysis role, which involved driving analytics, budgeting and strategic planning initiatives for the business.

Before this role, she worked at PwC where she led teams in performing external audits of companies belonging to diverse industries, and handled financial reporting, taxation and internal controls and compliance.

Laurel comes to Upaya with a breadth of development experience and a passion for exploring innovative solutions to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Before joining Upaya, Laurel worked at the Initiative for Global Development (IGD) promoting business-driven economic growth in Africa. With IGD she conducted research and supported the Communications and Development teams. Prior to that position, she worked with marginalized communities in Central America and the Caribbean. Her focus on underserved populations extended home where she fundraised for the Mid-Valley Women's Crisis Service, tutored at-risk elementary school students and mentored teenage mothers. She also spent two years as a Legislative Aid to Oregon State Senator Ginny Burdick where she worked on Tuition Equity legislation.

Laurel holds a B.A. in Politics and History from Willamette University.

Amit brings experience in accounts, finance, taxation and audit to Upaya team. He is a chartered accountant and holds a masters in commerce from Devi Ahilya University, Indore, India.

Prior to Upaya, Amit worked with M/s Sanjay Mehta & Associates, Indore as an associate and played a key role in corporate financing and provision of related services to a number of infrastructure projects financed by banks and financial institutions. Before this Amit worked with Pyramid Consultants & Services Pvt Ltd as a financial analyst in corporate financing domain after completing his articleship at M/s Jain Ritesh & Company engaged in providing accounts, taxation and auditing services to a number of clients.

Amit is part of a team that provides financial management technical assistance to portfolio companies of Upaya and will also handle accounts and finance of Upaya Social Ventures India Private Ltd.
